Before President Donald Trump took office, it was politicians like Governor Scott Walker who paved the way for anti-science, anti-environment propaganda to enter the mainstream.
As governor, Scott Walker has slashed funds for renewable energy, put his own climate change denier in charge of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, and signed legislation that lets special interests get away with pollution. During his failed presidential campaign, he even advocated for dismantling the Environmental Protection Agency.
So it’s not surprising that Walker cheered when the Trump administration announced its rollback of the Clean Energy Plan, a science-driven, Obama-era policy to reduce emissions by 32 percent before 2030. Heck, I’m only surprised that Trump didn’t tweet at Walker thanking him for all his ideas to support big polluters.
Despite everything that’s happened, I still believe Wisconsin can lead the way in both environmental protection and the clean energy jobs of the future. Add your name to the petition and tell President Trump and Governor Walker you’re not going to let them get away with their attacks on our environment and our economic future.
With your help, I will be the science-driven, pro-growth governor who returns Wisconsin to its place as a leader in environmental leadership and good-paying green jobs.
It was here in Wisconsin where regular people and a bold progressive leader, Senator Gaylord Nelson, came together to spark the grassroots movement that led to Earth Day and the creation of the EPA. And unlike Trump and Walker, Nelson understood that economic growth and environmental protection are not mutually exclusive objectives.
Our neighbors in Minnesota understand this — and that’s why they are charging ahead with their own Clean Power Plan while also beating us at job creation and economic growth. So we must both lead our state forward in the green economy by working to defeat Walker and to fight back against Trump if we’re going to turn Wisconsin, and our planet, around.
If you’re with me, add your name and tell Governor Walker and President Trump that Wisconsinites are going to fight their plans that reward big polluters at the expense of regular people and our environment every step of the way.
